It feels like just yesterday we were putting together Jett’s now-viral-on-Pinterest nursery, but alas, it’s time for an upgrade! My wild child started consistently climbing out of his crib after he turned 2, and we didn’t know what to do.
We tried taking the rail off the “convertible” crib… That didn’t work.
We brought in the mattress from our guest room and put it on the floor… That didn’t work.
He would rather sleep on the floor in front of his door. Is this normal? We don’t know. But after a few months of not sleeping great, we decided it’s time to upgrade to a “big boy room” and got him his own twin bed. I am happy with how it turned out!
If you haven’t seen Jett’s nursery, here’s a few pictures and the full blog post here with all the details.

Now for the “big boy room” reveal…..
Ta-da!
All we really changed was swapping the crib for a twin bed. I still want to get taupe blackout curtains so it’s not so bright, but I’m happy with how it turned out so far!
I chose a black twin bed frame that tied in the black from the mirror and curtains. It was very affordable and took me about 3 hours to put together by myself. Pro tip: do it with your partner and use a drill! I hand tightened every screw because my husband was at work and I really wanted to get it done, so he tightened them for me with the proper tool once he got home. It would probably take an hour with 2 people and the right tools.
For the bedding, I wanted to do a comforter/duvet, but my son is only 2.5 and doesn’t sleep under the covers yet. I didn’t want anything too heavy for his age so he couldn’t get trapped under it. Instead, I opted for a light quilt and I got some fun sheets that I thought he would like.
How cute are these car sheets?! They have cars, trucks, a road & trees on them, and I picked them out so he could drive his cars on them. He was very excited!
He is also into planes (my husband is a pilot) & I found these cute Eddie Bauer airplane sheets that he loves.
I got his mattress from Costco (novaform) and chose it because of the price and the reviews. It came in a box all rolled up and when you cut the plastic wrap off it expands immediately into a twin mattress. Pretty cool! I would say it’s medium comfy, and very light. It’s definitely not super comfy, but it’s really not bad. I have slept on it and it was fine. It’s great for a child.
I put a waterproof mattress protector over it in case anything spills through the sheets so it protects the mattress.
The quilt came with a matching white pillowcase, and I added a leather pillow and asked my mom to make this gingham check pillow. Then I draped his Kyte toddler blanket (that he is obsessed with) at the end of the bed and of course a stuffed animal.
If you have/had a Kyte baby sleep sack, you need to get your toddler a Kyte toddler blanket! It’s the same exact material so it’s familiar and my child is attached to it. It is definitely worth the money. We even bring it with us when we travel!
I still need to figure out a sign for the wall…it’s been 2.5 years but it’s definitely not a priority of mine with everything else on my plate!
He loves his new bed, and sleeps in it most of the time, but I do have to tell him on the monitor to get back in bed because he’s in a weird habit of sleeping on the floor right now! Does anyone else’s kid do this?!
Anyways, that’s our big boy room! It’s fun to change it up but still keep the overall color scheme, and I’m sure as he gets older and has more opinions it will look differently but I love how versatile the room is to accommodate many themes over the years!
