Coordinate, don’t match!
Neutrals are always a good idea. Either get a neutral dress for mom, or put dad in a white or cream top. Have one person wear a pattern. For fall, a subtle floral pattern on a dress could be cute, or a flannel shirt that ties in colors from another person works too! We put Jett in a flannel, my husband wore a neutral cream pullover with light blue jeans, and I wore a rust colored dress that pulled out some color from my son’s flannel shirt.
I was going for a fall vibe, so we had my baby in a flannel and boots, and my husband in a nice pullover.
Click here for my dress. It runs a little bit big, so if you are between sizes, size down! I am wearing a S. I had some questions on ship time, and for me I ordered September 26 and received it October 1, so less than a week!
My favorite stores to order from for photoshoot dresses are Baltic Born and Petal & Pup. Keep scrolling for more dress inspo.

Think about your location
Think about your location and the colors that will be in the background. If you are having photos taken at a park with a lot of trees, don’t wear green or you will blend in. Blue can be hit or miss. Look through the editing style of your photographer and past photoshoots they have done at your location. See what colors look the best! I like to wear neutrals and muted tones, and stay away from primary colors or anything super bright and flashy. If you are having photos taken in a downtown location or a white background, then you don’t have to worry about blending in with trees and can go for the green!
If you are self conscious about any part of your body, pick an outfit that you feel confident and beautiful in! I don’t know why it took me so long to figure this out, but I found that I feel better about my arms in a dress that has a longer sleeve rather than sleeveless. If you don’t like how your legs look in photos, choose a maxi or midi dress.

Some tips for a photoshoot with a toddler:
1. Book a mini session! Their attention span is so short and they like to move so keeping the shoot as short a possible is key.
2. Bring snacks & toys
I’m not gonna lie – Jett had a meltdown during our shoot and wanted to run around and not be held. Our photographer was amazing and got some great shots, so you would never know! But he screamed, ran away, cried, and we had to bribe him with snacks, going through my purse & we had to take breaks.
Pack some patience and some snacks/toys and try to keep it as positive as possible.
OK – you’re going to think I’m completely psycho – but if you’re a visual person like me, I have to see the outfits all together. Before I ordered our outfits, I took screenshots of them online, then uploaded them to Canva. I took a photo from my photographer’s site of what our location looks like, then photoshopped our outfits on top of the background to see what it would look like. Here’s what it looked like: I know, I’m nuts!
I am a planner but also a procrastinator, so a couple days before the shoot I realized I didn’t have a cream colored shirt for my baby to wear! I ran to Target and found only one sweater I wasn’t crazy about. So I changed my mind and put my husband in cream, and put my baby in a flannel I found from the H&M outlet (sadly I can’t find it online to link it, but I linked some similar above).
