Let me start by setting the scene. The year is 2020. There is a global pandemic with nationwide shutdowns, quarantine, riots, and a lot of uncertainty in our nation. We spent March – May pretty much cooped up in our apartment, finding creative ways to have fun while both working remotely. At the beginning of June, we decided to get out of the house and spend an afternoon at the lake. On the way there, Spencer and I were in a car accident that totaled my car and left me with a concussion. We were dealing with insurance, medical appointments, the pandemic, and then…
I realized I missed my period. Hmm…could it be…? Probably not, right? But, I had a few pregnancy tests in the cabinet, so I went to the bathroom out of curiosity and took a pregnancy test. I took my time, washed my hands, didn’t look at it…and then I did. Not one, but TWO lines showed up and I was SHOCKED. We were not actively “trying” to get pregnant, but we weren’t doing anything to prevent it. We wanted it to happen naturally. I was so surprised I was shaking and looked at myself in the mirror like WHAT! Our lives were about to change.
I am the type of person who used to watch the cute videos on YouTube of people telling their spouse they’re pregnant and had a few ideas pinned on Pinterest from years ago. But I was so surprised, I didn’t know what to do, and I didn’t have anything fun planned! So, I just walked out into our living room holding the test behind my back and walked up to Spencer who was on his computer. I said, “Hey babe”….and then showed him the positive test while my hands were shaking. “It might be wrong, I don’t know, but I think I might be pregnant,” I said. (One of the lines was sort of faint, so I didn’t want to get too excited). So Spencer went to the store and got another brand of test for me to take.
That test couldn’t be more clear: it said the word “Pregnant” across it – no lines to decipher. WHAT?! I guess we really are pregnant! We were both so shocked but so excited. We couldn’t pop a bottle of champagne to celebrate, but we took a few pictures together to remember the moment.
